Cloning is a important issue that not a lot of people know a lot about because it can be complex to understand. The problem is that there is not that much research going on, because most places are putting bans on experimenting with cloning. There is controversy on both sides on the issue, mainly concerning the ethics of whether it is okay to clone people or organs for any purpose. The issue of cloning is important for people to know and be informed about because it could impact you in the future. You never know if you will get sick and end up in the hospital needing a organ transplant. People who need organ transplants usually end up having to wait a long time on the waiting list to get a organ they need, and this could take longer than the patient can last for. In the United States there are more than 122,344 people waiting for a lifesaving organ transplant, and every 12 minutes another name is added to that list. Unfortunately an average of 18 people die each day from lack of available organs for transplant. If research on cloning continues then soon there will be a way to use therapeutic cloning to create new organs from the patients own cells. This is even better then waiting on a organ from a donor, because it can reduce the rate of organ rejection that most patients get because their bodies aren't excepting the foreign organ. So if it was a cloned organ that has the same genetic makeup as the patient, it is more likely that it will be successful and they would not have to wait on a waiting list in hope of getting a new organ, because they can just have their own cloned organ created for them. Also this can concern you later in life, if you find out that you are infertile and your partner is as well and you really want to have a baby.
The main benefit gained from cloning is the research from it. Research from it will help us understand and fix birth defects and to figure out cures for diseases like cancer, Parkinson’s, and Alzheimer’s by having entire organs produced to assist in the study of the different treatments. What I think will fix the problem of helping people who need organ transplants or couples trying to find an alternative way to have a child is by increasing the amount of research being done with cloning. We cannot increase research if most places don’t even allow people to do it because of restrictions from laws. So what we need to do is vote for cloning laws to be passed so we can research different aspects of it in order to advance medical research.
So you should vote for cloning laws. Some issues we can vote on is whether or not it’s okay to use cloning in research, whether we should have public funding for cloning, or should therapeutic and reproductive cloning be allowed. California for example has a “Clone and Kill” provision which prohibits cloning human embryos with the intent to ‘initiate a pregnancy that could result in the birth of a human being’ which essentially means people can clone human embryos for research as long as they destroy it after. This obviously isn't helpful for the issue of infertile couples who want a child. There are a lot of different aspects of cloning that certain states allow and if we want to further our knowledge in cloning then we need to vote to allow embryonic and reproductive stem cell research on cloning to be passed. We need to vote for it to be okay to clone, because we still have so much to learn about, and the only way to see if there is any benefit in it is to research and see what works and what doesn’t.
